About this beach

Warnings and hazards

Alcohol is not permitted.

Dogs are allowed on a leash only.

Comfortable footwear as well as water shoes are recommended.

The way down to the beach is steep and not appropriate for people with health issues.

Overlook Park Beach is one of the marvelous Canyon Lake Beaches. The park features a 0.6-mile loop hiking trail and lake access. The trail is good for walking, hiking, and birdwatching, while the lake is a popular swimming and boating spot.

Location and Access

Overlook Park boasts a convenient location on Canyon Lake at 601 Coe Road, which is just within an hour from San Antonio and Austin. The park is open from 7 a. m. to sunset all year round and entrance is free. Parking on busy days may be challenging, so it’s better to arrive early.

Facilities

The park offers only the most basic amenities such as picnic tables, restrooms, and porta-potties. Don’t expect to find toilet paper. The number of picnic tables is limited. There are no shower or hand washing facilities on site.

Beach Area

To approach the main beach, you should take a short trail down the rocky slopes – it’s quite a steep path, which is probably not appropriate for people with health issues. The lakeside area is small and a bit rocky, so it is recommended to bring chairs, cushions, and water shoes.

In high season, it can get overcrowded. If you’re looking for more seclusion, take a trail to the left along the shoreline – you’ll probably find a quieter spot there. Be careful, since there are large rocks beneath the water.

The lake is beautiful and clear and the water is very clean. Many families come here to spend the whole day and bring their tents, coolers, grills, boats, and inflatables.

On the Dam

Once you’re done on the beach, it might be a good idea to take a long stroll across the top of the dam and enjoy the gorgeous views of the lake and the Guadalupe River.

Other Activities

There aren’t many entertainment opportunities in Overlook Park except for the most simple (but it doesn’t mean less rewarding!) recreational activities such as hiking, picnicking, fishing, and wildlife watching. There are good chances to spot deer, squirrel, and various bird species.

Dog Policies

The park rules allow bringing dogs, which is exactly what many visitors do. Just remember that your furry companion must be leashed.
