About this beach

Warnings and hazards

It is highly recommended to bring a bug spray.

There are no lifeguards so swimming is at your own risk.

Mitchelville Beach Park is a quiet and uncrowded beach-side escape and one of the best natural landscapes on Hilton Head Island. It is a real hidden gem! In addition to amazing views of South Carolina’s serene coastline, you’ll enjoy sunbathing and swimming in the clear waters of the Atlantic.

It is one of the most tranquil beaches on the island even during the busiest days – the place of choice for those who are looking for a quiet and secluded spot to relax and unwind close to the sea and pristine nature.

Location and Access

Mitchelville Beach is located at 124 Mitchelville Road, which is along the north end of Hilton Head Island near Hilton Head Island Airport. Parking is free. There is a shady nature path leading from the parking lot down to the beach. The entrance is free as well.

The park is open every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in summer and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in winter. In contrast to the other beaches on the island, Mitchelville Beach has no wheelchair matting.

Amenities

Mitchelville Beach Park is equipped with such amenities as bathrooms, outdoor rinse showers, and a picnic area with tables.

Beach

The park boasts a spacious beach that is usually deserted or with few people. The sand and water are very clean. However, some parts of the beach can be muddy. The ocean is beautiful but if you want to swim, you might want to go elsewhere. There is no lifeguard station and the bottom is not very smooth.

Other Activities

Mitchelville Beach Park is one big park to explore! It’s a good place to look for shells, shark teeth, driftwood, and Horseshoe crabs. Besides, you will enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and the southern tip of St. Helena Island. If you want to see more wildlife, it is highly recommended to visit during low tide, when the salt marshes and beach tide pools are more visible.
