The 20-acre beachfront Great Dunes Park Beach boasts the most popular family-oriented beach on Jekyll Island. It is easily accessible and offers a variety of well-maintained facilities, a large grass area, and easy beach access.
If you’re an early bird, don’t miss the opportunity to see the sunrise on Great Dunes Park Beach – you’re going to remember that fantastic view!
Location and Access
You can find Great Dunes Park at the end of the Ben Fortson Parkway on North Beachview Drive, Jekyll Island, Georgia. It is located near the Jekyll Island Convention Center and has plenty of parking for beachgoers. People with physical disabilities can access the beach at crossover #32.
The park is open all year round. There is no entrance fee but you have to pay a fee of $8 to get onto Jekyll Island.
Amenities
The park has a parking lot, bike racks, public restrooms, changing rooms, rinse showers, and a covered beach deck. If you want to have a family picnic, you can use one of the picnic pavilions with grills. If you want to have meals prepared for you, go to one of the nearby restaurants.
Across the street, you can find a mini-golf course, playground, bike, and Segway rentals. There is also the Great Dunes Park Pavilion – a perfect oceanfront venue for weddings, parties, and other events (for reservations, call 912 635 6400 or email jekyllparks@jekyllisland.com).
Beach Access
The beach is wide, consisting of soft, hard-packed sand, which is easy to walk on. It is the best beach on the island for finding sand dollars. At low tide, you can also pick up many seashells. The beach is located on the ocean side of the island so be prepared to see some jellyfish in the water and on the sand along the waterline.
There are no lifeguard towers so please exercise caution when swimming. The water is warm but can be quite muddy and brownish in color due to currents.
Bikes and Trails
There are bike rentals across the street, so you can rent a bike and explore more than 20 miles of bike trails within the Jekyll Island Trail System.
Other Activities
There are play areas, volleyball courts, and bocce ball. Great Dunes Park is also used for releasing rehabilitated sea turtles from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center as well as for holding annual events and festivals.
Bring Your Pet
Great Dunes Park is a pet-friendly area so feel free to bring your four-legged friend. However, abide by the park rules and keep your pet on a leash no longer than 16’ at all times.
