A real hidden gem on Jekyll Island, Glory Beach is a tranquil stretch of sand perfect for soothing, peaceful activities like sunbathing, birdwatching, strolling, and swimming. You’re unlikely to find many crowds on Glory Beach, so this is the place to come if you’re looking forward to relaxing and unwinding to the sound of waves on your day-off.
Location and Access
You can find Glory Beach behind the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex; the detailed address is 700 South Beachview Drive, Jekyll Island, Georgia. There is a small parking lot near the beach. The daily parking pass costs $6, which is paid when entering Jekyll Island.
In order to reach the beach, you should walk along the lengthy boardwalk across the dunes and freshwater pools. If the day is clear enough, you’ll be able to see Little Cumberland Island from the end of the boardwalk.
Movie Shooting
This place will be especially interesting for film buffs because in 1989 it was used for shooting scenes from the Civil War drama “Glory”, starring Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Denzel Washington, and Matthew Broderick. This is how the beach got its name. Moreover, the boardwalk to the beach was built specially for the film shooting.
Facilities
Except for the parking lot and boardwalk, there are no other facilities on the beach – be prepared for that and put on your swimming suit beforehand. There are no places to buy food, or drinks, or beach stuff, so take everything you may need with you. You can enjoy a picnic at the seaside but expect no tables – only the serene, sandy seashore.
Beach Conditions
Like the other beaches on Jekyll Island, Glory Beach features immaculate sands and beautiful, clear waters. The beach is flat and quite breezy, which makes it a great spot for flying a kite or riding a bike and staying cool. The warm, blue water is just gorgeous!
Dog Policies
Unfortunately for dog owners, this beach doesn’t allow pets, no matter leashed or unleashed.
