Located in the Clam Creek Picnic Area on Jekyll Island, Jekyll Island Pier is a nice oceanfront spot for fishing, crabbing, strolling, enjoying the ocean views, wildlife viewing, and simply talking in the scenery. It is said to be one of the only three ocean piers on the Georgia coast.
Jekyll Island Fishing Pier is an all-year-round family-friendly area with all necessary facilities and a favorite spot with local fishermen, who are mostly very nice guys. You are unlikely to see big crowds here and the pier is good in size to offer enough space for those fishing as well as those walking and enjoying the views.
Location and Access
Jekyll Island Fishing Pier is located at North Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, Georgia. It is open 24 hours daily throughout the year. At night, it is properly lit up. If you go by car, there is a small parking lot to park your vehicle.
Amenities
There are public restrooms available. If you like picnics, bring your favorite food and occupy one of the picnic tables within a short walking distance from the pier. There are grills for cooking. Moreover, if you’re planning to stay long, bringing your own lunch is a must since there are no grocery shops or restaurants in the area – just some ice cream at the bait shop. The pier has awnings so you don’t have to worry about where to hide from the sun.
Fishing
The pier offers a large open area to cast a line. There is a wide range of species to catch – from mullets to massive sharks. Since the pier is conveniently located near the Jekyll Island Fishing Center, you can easily buy gear, bait, ice, and even fishing guides. However, you are unlikely to need the guides since local fishermen are always eager to share their skills and knowledge with novices.
Beach
There is a sandy beach close by, a great destination for sunbathing, swimming, and horseback riding. The sand is very clean. There are no lifeguard stations so swimming is at your own risk. Be aware that there are swift currents under and near the pier so avoid swimming there.
Other Activities
The pier is surrounded by scenic views wherever you look. The sunsets are beautiful. If you are in the mood for some physical activity, there are hike and bike trails all throughout the area.
