Sunset Key Cottages is a secluded 27-acre beach resort with private cottages on a tropical island 500 yards off the coast of Key West. The cottages are dotted along the white-sand beach with crystal clear waters, thatched huts, and swaying hammocks.
There are no cars and no crowds on the island. The serene and tranquil ambiance of the resort makes it a perfect destination for a relaxing and soothing family or romantic vacation away from the stressful, noisy, and polluted city.
Location and Access
Sunset Key is located approximately 500 yards from Key West Harbor. You can access the island only on a comfortable shuttle boat running from Margaritaville Marina on the mainland (every 30 minutes from early morning until 2 a.m.). Since there are no cars on the island, you can travel only on foot or on golf carts (all distances are very short).
If you don’t like the conditions of the beach, you can go to the swimming pool with cooler water. There is an in-house spa offering a wide range of exotic treatments and massages. Latitude Café serves Caribbean delicacies to guests as well as non-guests. The spa is also available to non-residents.
Note that Latitude Café is the only restaurant on the island and when it’s closed you can only dine out on the mainland or have a picnic with your own food. There is no grocery shop either, so it’s better to always have some snacks and drinking water at hand.
There are two main swimming spots on the island. The one featuring a roped-off swimming area is located in the north end of the island to the right from the Latitude restaurant. It boasts a serene white-sand shoreline that rarely gets crowded. There are lounge chairs, umbrellas, and plenty of shady palm trees. The area is very clean. The beach is small and not suitable for strolling or running but you can sunbathe and swim there.
The other swimming spot has got two water breakers and is situated in the western part of the island. This beach is absolutely wild.
There may be currents (including those created by the ferry), so be careful in the water. Another downside is that the beach is quite rocky, so water shoes are highly recommended. There are bathrooms on the beach, so you don’t have to go back to your accommodation once you need to use those.
There is a pier with fishing equipment provided so you can enjoy a couple of hours fishing. Sunset views are incredible – don’t miss them if you’re lucky to stay on the island overnight. For sports enthusiasts, there are volleyball courts available.
