About this beach

Warnings and hazards

Come early to get a good spot – the beach is very small.

Water shoes are recommended – the bottom is quite rocky.

Simonton Street Beach is a small sandy beach with restroom facilities and boat ramp for recreational purposes located on the Gulf side of Key West. Most of the visitors are locals. There is nothing spectacular about the beach but it is conveniently located and can be quickly reached by walking. If you don’t want to drive out or hop on the free shuttle to Fort Zachary, this is the place for you.

Location and Access

You can find Simonton Street Beach at the north end of Simonton Street in Key West, Florida. The beach runs parallel to Front Street. Actually, it’s the only beach on the west side of downtown Key West. This convenient location makes it a popular place. There is parking available.

Facilities

The beach is small and humble but still features a variety of amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, chair and umbrella rentals, a watersport vendor, and a boat ramp. There is a fast-food vendor offering snacks and drinks. You can get delicious seafood, tacos, and beer at Lagerheads Beach Bar. Sometimes they have live music.

Swimming Conditions

The sand is soft enough to put a towel, lie down, and relax. You can also rent lounge chairs and umbrellas on-site ($10 per person). However, the beach doesn’t have a lot of space and can get really crowded so come early if you want to get a good spot on a beach chair.

The shore is rocky and sometimes gets covered in seaweed – water shoes are recommended. There is a nice sand bar to wade out into. The beach is quite good for swimming since it gets fairly deep. The water is usually very clear and you can easily see colorful fish and even manatees while swimming.

Other Activities

If you like more active recreation, you’ll be happy to know there are watersport rentals on site. The beach has a pier – a nice place to hang out with a drink. Another popular activity on the beach is watching sunsets – very convenient for those who stay nearby and wish to finish their evening walk with a romantic view. It’s also a great place to watch the 4th of July Fireworks.

Dog Policies

Good news for dog owners – the beach is dog-friendly! The area with the boat ramp is a good place to take dogs for a swim.
