South Beach is easily accessible and located within a very short driving distance from Savannah. This beach is far from phenomenal but still okay for those looking for a quick beach holiday near the city.
You can’t drive your car directly on the sand, but there is close and ample parking, which costs 2 dollars per hour and can be paid either by credit/debit cards or in cash. South Beach is not very commercialized but has such amenities as bathrooms and food outlets.
Good Access And Paid Parking
South Beach is located close to Savannah and is easy to get to. Car owners will be glad to discover a parking lot near the beach, which is almost always available.
The parking fee is 2 dollars per hour, and the self-pay terminals accept either credit/debit cards or quarters. If you don’t have quarters, prepare to visit the nearby stores and ask the sales staff – which is not always helpful in this aspect – for a change but make sure you have paid for your parking. The parking patrol watches the visitors closely.
Fines For Bringing Dogs
Dogs are not allowed on this beach. You shouldn’t let your pet out of the car, or else you may have to pay a heavy fine. Be careful.
Not Very Clean And Limited Amenities
The degree of cleanliness of the beach areas and facilities is average, and, in this aspect, South Beach can be hit or miss. Some days are fine, but sometimes you come to find litter in the sand and seaweed in the water. The facilities aren’t very clean either.
There are public bathrooms in numerous locations, and it’s quite comfortable. The problem is there are only bathrooms – not a single shower or a changing room. So if you come for swimming or tanning, don’t waste time looking for a changing room and change clothes in one of the restrooms. Not very convenient but better than nothing.
Nice Place For a Walk Or a Picnic
South Beach is nothing phenomenal but still nice to visit on less busy days. There is a large pier, which is free to enter. Good place for walking, fishing, or having a picnic – there is a shaded area with tables. If you don’t bring your own food, there are concessions where you can buy something for a bite. But if you want a hearty dinner with your family, you’d better go outside the beach – there are restaurants and shops within a short walking distance.
Swimming Conditions
South Beach boasts a gentle slope into the water and shallow tide pools at low tide, which makes it a safe and comfortable place for swimming, especially for kids and unskillful swimmers. On some days, though, you should beware of jellyfish.
