As the name suggests, North beach is on the north end of Tybee Island, across from the historic Tybee Lighthouse and Fort Screven, approximately a 20-minute drive from Savannah.
There is no free public parking on the Island. From 8 am to 8 pm, Pay & Display rates are $2 per hour and you can park right on the beachfront.
Love Tybee Island for a nice weekend getaway! All the beaches there are cool but North is probably my favorite, because it’s less crowded than South and because it has all the landmarks around it, giving it a nice historic vibe.
Definitely go to the lighthouse before you go to the beach and climb up. My boyfriend and I took some great pictures up there!
Beach and amenities
The beach is clean and feels very organized, as it features so many well-maintained facilities (toilets, changing rooms, bath house). You go down to the beach through a boardwalk and, even though it’s usually not empty, there’s plenty of space because it’s wide. We used to bring our own umbrellas and chairs, but I think some places renting them have opened there now (though not many and not easy to find).
North Beach is great if you are into shell collecting and fishing. My boyfriend is obsessed with fishing and always chats to all the fishermen there who, admittedly, are all very polite and friendly putting up with his annoying questions! Last time we were there, they said we had only just missed the dolphins right there on the shore. I really hope I get to see them sometime!
There’s also good shopping around the area and quite a few eateries. One of them, the North Beach Bar and Grill, is right on the beach. It’s perfect for some fish tacos and live music, but there are plenty of other options around if you’re willing to walk 5-10 minutes.
Great solid beach spot overall, top marks.
