Krause Springs is a popular recreational destination with a convenient location and easy access in the scenic Hill Country in Texas. The 115-acre property has been privately owned by the Krause family for more than half a century. Featuring more than 30 springs throughout the territory, Krause Springs is actually best known for its main large swimming hole with a rope swing and grotto. It’s a family-friendly swimming spot, where smoking, loud music, and pets are prohibited.
Location And Access
Krause Springs is located off Highway 71 in Spicewood, just about 30 miles away from Austin, and is easy to get to. It’s open from 9 a. m. till 9 p. m. every day. Children under 4 can enter for free; other visitors have to pay an admission fee in cash. Credit cards are not accepted. Overnight campers will be charged with additional fees.
Amenities And Facilities
The parking lot is spacious, and still, it’s better to arrive early in the morning in the busy summer months. There are camping facilities (which can be used for additional fees), a spring-fed manmade pool, pavilion, barbecue pits, restroom and shower facilities. Finally, there is a spectacular butterfly garden and a huge garden area with water fountains, benches, and a hammock – good places for walks and relaxation.
Main Swimming Hole
The pool is fed by springs which flow year-round and have a constant temperature of 68 degrees. If you like crystal clear water, probably, you should restrict yourself to sunbathing on the shore, since the water in the pool is still, brown, and murky – so murky that you can’t see your toes when stepping in. If you decide to swim anyway, be careful when entering the water because there are many slippery areas.
Even though the water is far from spectacular, there is a variety of opportunities for having fun in it. There is a rope swing and convenient cliff point to jump off into the pool. Both kids and adults can have fun exploring a beautiful grotto with ferns and dripping water. On limestone rocks, there is enough space to place your belongings and yourself to sunbathe, picnic, or just relax.
Camping Facilities
Krause Springs offers facilities for primitive tent camping as well as RV camping with water and electric hookups. In total, there are 24 RV campsites, which are situated quite close to each other. The tent sites are more spread out. Some of the campsites have barbecue grills and/or fire pits. There are also grills and picnic tables throughout the area.
