King Fisher Beach is located in Port O’Connor in Matagorda Bay, Texas. This beach is small and offers no spectacular expansive views (it looks rather like a city park for local events) but it’s still a nice and cozy place to spend time with your date or family or enjoy the sun and the sea by yourself.
Port O’Connor citizens and enterprises have made a great effort and considerable investments to create and maintain this convenient family-friendly area on the seashore.
King Fisher Beach is a perfectly appropriate place for such activities as swimming, sunbathing, shelling, fishing, strolling, and watching some of the brightest sunrises. There is a whole variety of vessels to watch near the jetties, including intercostal barges, fishing boats, and shrimping boats.
If you’re keen on fishing or would like to try it, there’s a pier well fit for that. On the 4th of July, you can see a beautiful fireworks show at this beach.
Access and Parking
King Fisher Beach is located at the end of the town’s main road. The entrance is free and the parking is ample and easy. Despite its small size, the beach rarely gets overcrowded since there aren’t too many visitors.
Even on holidays, the area is not too congested, and it’s not a problem to quickly leave after the fireworks on the 4th of July.
Sand and Water
King Fisher Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches for little children. Since the beach is located on the bay, there are no strong waves. The water is clean, clear, and very shallow, and the bottom is smooth, so your little ones can safely play in it as well as on the shore.
There isn’t much sand but it’s enough for simple beach activities. Such a small amount of sand is explained by the history of this place which was artificially created by a man named King Fisher in the 20th century.
Since then, the beach has needed to be regularly resupplied with sand in order to remain a beach. The sand is delivered from the ship channel maintenance and is clean, packed, and free of debris most of the time.
Other Activities
There’s a nice small boardwalk on the beach and a stone walkway out into the sea. If you want to take a stroll along the waterline, it’s better to have your sandals on since there may be some oyster shells mixed in the sand. However, the sand is packed and easy to step on.
Right next to it, there’s a wide and well-maintained grassy area with benches, shaded picnic tables, and a covered pavilion – there are many spots to choose from if you’re planning a picnic.
The beach pier is most popular with local as well as out-of-town fishermen. Entrance is free, and fishing in these calm waters can be very rewarding.
There’s a playground with swings for kids. If you’re looking for some wildlife, there is a chance to see hermit crabs, blue crabs, various species of fish, and even baby bottom feeder sharks.
Overall, King Fisher Beach is a calm and quiet beach with a simple but convenient and relaxing ambiance.
