About this beach

Warnings and hazards

Bring water and sunblock as there isn’t much shade.

No swimming area. Dangerous currents.

Use the restroom before going inside the fort.

One of the oldest and most popular local attractions, Fort Moultrie combines a rich history with access to undeveloped and unpopulated coastal beaches. Don’t expect an opportunity to swim since there is no swimming area but you can walk, collect shells, and enjoy the views of the ocean, seabirds, dolphins, container ships, and bright sunsets.

Location and Access

Fort Moultrie is located at 1214 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. The fort is easy to get to and there is a wide paved parking area with plenty of free parking.

Facilities

There are decent restrooms and a water station in the back of the visitor’s center. Use the restroom before you go to the fort as there are no restrooms inside.

Be aware that there is no place to buy any food, only a vending machine with soft drinks and water, so it is better to bring a picnic. There is a picnic area right off the parking lot section or you can go to the shore and picnic on the beach.

Fort Access

Fort Moultrie is a series of fortifications built for the defense of the city of Charleston. It is the area where you can trace the entire history of American seacoast defense from 1776 to 1947 (171 years in total).

Entrance is charged ($3 for adults, $1 for seniors, and free for children 15 and younger), you can buy tickets across the street. The fort is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except for a few national holidays). There are self-guided as well as guided tours.

Beach Access

The beaches are located just a stone’s throw away from the fort (for example, there is a wonderful small public beach right in front of the fort), so you can walk out to the sand and water, collect some beautiful seashells, enjoy the sunset, or watch cargo ships coming in and dolphins swimming by. However, there is no swimming area and there are signs warning against swimming, which can be dangerous due to strong currents.

Visitor questions:

Question: Is this a clothing optional or a nude beach?
Asked by Joe Gitch 10 months ago
Answer: No, Fort Moultrie Beach is neither clothing optional nor nude. Moreover, there is no designated swimming area here due to rip currents. The only nude beach in South Carolina is Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Beach. Check it out on our site!
