The least developed of Georgia’s famous Golden Isles, Little St. Simons Island is a privately owned island resort offering 7 miles of pristine beaches surrounded by wilderness. Since 1979, this serene and secluded spot for relaxation and exploration has been open to the public.
It offers a wide variety of recreational activities including swimming, sunbathing, shell collecting, picnicking, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, birdwatching, and wildlife watching. It’s a great destination for families, couples, and individual travelers, who can enjoy seclusion and safety, all at the same time.
Location and Access
Located slightly east and north of Sea Island and St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island can only be accessed by boat. If you want to visit the island, you must make arrangements through the lodge office. The island owner’s private boat departs from Hampton River Marina on the north end of St. Simons Island.
The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island
Run by the island’s owner, the Lodge on Little St. Simons Island offers six comfortable cottages for as few as 32 overnight guests. Surrounded by marshes and live oaks, visitors can truly feel the unhurried pace of coastal living here.
It is worthwhile to note that meals are prepared with organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs that are grown on-site. The Lodge also provides day trips including private vessel transportation, a guided tour of the island, a lunch of specialties, and some time for beach recreation.
Nature
The island has become popular thanks to its natural beauty, scenic landscapes, and abundant wildlife. It boasts rare and threatened wild species and natural, intact habitats. The island is home to 334 species of birds, including red knots, roseate spoonbills, bald eagles, painted buntings, wood storks, black-necked stilts, American oystercatchers, and piping plovers.
Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the island’s beach during their nesting season. The island’s owners have practiced preservation efforts to protect the ecological integrity of the island for many years already and are planning to continue on the course.
Beach
The island boasts a tranquil, seven-mile, undeveloped beach where you can soak up the sun, collect shells and sand dollars, and swim. If you come early in the morning, you’re likely to be all alone there, surrounded by miles of beach and sand dunes. Fantastic! Very clean. However, the water may be not very clear since the nearby river dumps muddy silt into the ocean. Otherwise, swimming is an enjoyable experience.
Fishing
Bring your fishing rods and practice your fishing skills in the tidal creeks and surf for a catch of flounder, black drum, redfish, and speckled trout.
