Lake Conroe was created on the San Jacinto River in 1973 as an alternative water source for the City of Houston. It’s a huge reservoir with a 157-mile shoreline with rich wildlife and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Thanks to its close proximity to a city as big as Houston, the recreational area around Lake Conroe has intensively developed and transformed over the last decade.
Many of the lakeside communities offer quality camping facilities, scenic hiking and biking trails, high-class golf resorts and tennis facilities as well as the typical water amenities for boating, fishing, and watersports.
Location And Access
Lake Conroe is located very close to Houston – it’s just a one-hour drive north from downtown Houston via IH-45. The area is well-developed and has a lot of businesses, including restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc.
Water Recreation
Being a drinking water source for the City of Houston, Lake Conroe features very clean and clear water, which is just perfect for such recreational activities as swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, jet skiing, etc. There are numerous rental services around the lake, which offer boats, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other watersport equipment at reasonable prices. Swimming in the lake is also popular and enjoyable.
Wildlife
The local wildlife is rather diverse and includes deer, alligators, various birds, and a lot of fish species. If you’re keen on fishing, take a rod and come to Lake Conroe, which is considered to be one of the best fishing spots in the area with species such as crappie, white bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth buffalo, striped bass, blue catfish, channel catfish, and flathead catfish.
