About this beach

Warnings and hazards

On windy days, the beach becomes more appropriate for surfing and bodyboarding rather than for family visits.

St. Augustine Beach is a 2-mile stretch of pristine, white-sand beach along the Atlantic Coast. This destination is popular with family visitors thanks to its kid-friendly splash pad and all possible amenities. The beach is rather scenic and not too crowded.

Location and Access

St. Augustine Beach is located 5 miles southeast of St. Augustine’s historic district. You can reach it by public transportation (bus or trolley) or by car. There is street and lot parking available but keep in mind that it’s limited so it’s better to arrive early in the morning.

The beach is public, there is no admission fee. However, if you want to access the pier, you’ll have to pay $2. The beach is open 24 hours a day.

Available Facilities

You can make use of restrooms and rinse showers – they are located near the splash pad for children. There is also a covered pavilion to hide from the sun and volleyball courts for sports enthusiasts. There are beach chair and umbrella rentals at a reasonable price. If you feel hungry, check out some of the restaurants and coffee shops in the vicinity.

Sand and Water

The sand on St. Augustine Beach is clean and great for walking. There are some shells to pick up. Since the beach is very wide, it offers enough room for everyone.

The water’s temperature is just perfect; however, it could be a bit more clear. Swimming is quite safe, there are lifeguards at various points along the shore and the waves are usually small, which is good for children.

However, on windy days this beach becomes more appropriate for surfing and bodyboarding rather than for calm family visits. Check the forecast before going.

St. Johns County Ocean Pier

You can find this pier at the north end of the beach. It’s a nice spot for a relaxing walk over the water and also a place of choice for those into fishing. There are a few benches to sit down and relax and lots of pigeons, pelicans, and grackles around to watch. There are also covered picnic tables available. The entrance fee is $2 for walking and $4 for fishing.

Dog Policies

Good news for dog owners – the beach is dog-friendly and you can bring your four-legged friend to have fun together. Just don’t forget to pick up after them to keep the beach clean.
