John Tanner Park boasts a lake with a large sandy beach and offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities including swimming, sunbathing, fishing, paddle boating, hiking, picnicking, and camping. It’s a good place to bring your family – nothing so special but nice, clean, scenic, and with plenty of facilities.
Location and Access
Located at 354 Tanner’s Beach Road in Carrollton, Georgia, John Tanner Park boasts a convenient location in the middle of the town. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day throughout the year. There is parking available but the parking spaces are not always enough so it is better to arrive early on weekends and in high season. The daily parking fee is $5.
Facilities
The park has public restrooms with showers (there is even a wheelchair accessible restroom). For kids, there are playground facilities. If you get hungry – there are concessions for snacks and drinks. If you bring your own food, you can make use of the park’s picnic area with covered picnic tables and grills.
Camping and Accommodation Opportunities
John Tanner Park offers campsites with electricity, water, and cable TV. There are eight pull-through sites for RVs and tents. There is also a group lodge near the lake offering bunk-style rooms with a kitchen and fireplace to accommodate up to 40 people. Apart from the above-mentioned, you can stay in a lakeside motel offering fully-equipped units (including one handicap unit).
Swimming Conditions
There are two lakes in the park: one is for fishing and the other (the upper lake) is for fishing, swimming, and paddle boating (there are paddleboat rentals on-site). The swimming beach has nice fresh sand. The lake is small and calm. There are no lifeguards on site so please exercise caution in the water and keep a close eye on children.
Other Activities
There is a paved walking trail around the upper lake where you can stroll, exercise, bike, or walk your dog. For biking, please bring your own bicycle. For sports enthusiasts, there is volleyball and miniature golf.
